The primary reason to upgrade from XP to any other OS is security – now XP is out of support, you will become more susceptible to viruses in the future – any internet based activity you carry out on your XP machine could cause further risk.
Windows 7 bit should be able to support 4GB, not limited to 3GB. As for the bit discussion, there are many good reasons for going to bit, but you have stated you require the bit. Was this reply helpful? With a 32 bit version of Windows 7 the maximum RAM is 4gb. If you want more you need a 64 bit version. Limitations on the maximum RAM that can be installed are also set by the motherboard specification.
As your motherboard was built was built for Windows XP it could be lower than the 4gb maximum set for all 32 bit versions of Windows 7, except Starter which is 2gb.. Its a limitation of an old design win and your motherboard and possibly Bios – there is no workaround.
There is probably little point in upgrading to a later version of win, on your old hardware, even if your hardware supported a later win version, which may be doubtful.
