After selecting the command prompt option, I was shown a list of available accounts me Administrator and asked to login. Since I apparently don’t remember the password, I cannot get past that screen.
In answer to your question, my admin account is Not a Microsoft account. I still have the local account, it Is a Microsoft account and is working fine.
But that doesn’t seem to help me. I have used Windows for over 15 years- this is the first time I have had an issue like this and I am becoming increasingly frustrated that there seems to be no way out of this loop Microsoft support engineers cannot help you retrieve passwords of files and features in Microsoft products that are lost or forgotten. I have been using a PIN to sign into my windows 10 laptop but it has started asking me for a password which I don’t know. When I boot the laptop I am presented with the password box and I have no option to change the signin to use my pin. I have trawled many posts and tried all the options but no matter what I am always asked for the password for the only account on the laptop.

There is only the 1 account for the machine which has the administrator rights. I have seen various tools for cracking passwords etc but I am a little wary of using them.
